486 – Sick of the Grind? How to Get the Fire Back in Your Trade Business | ft. Jeremiah Webb

You know the feeling.

The business is busy. The team is moving. Money is coming in.

But you are running on fumes, the days feel heavy, and the spark that used to drive you has gone missing.

If that sounds like you, Episode 486 is the reset you have been needing.

In this episode of The Site Shed Podcast, Matt sits down with Jeremiah Webb from Shop On Fire to unpack what is really going on when the passion fades and how you can get your fire back in a way that actually sticks.

The real problem is not the business; it is the energy

Most tradies do not burn out because they are weak.

They burn out because they have been strong for too long.

When you have spent years pushing through, carrying the mental load, and being the one who fixes every problem, the grind becomes normal.

Then one day you wake up, and the winds do not hit the same.

Your patience is thinner. Your motivation is gone.

And you start wondering if this is just what running a business feels like.

Jeremiah brings it back to a simple point: your business will not outgrow your energy. If you are flat, your team will feel it too.

Overwhelm is not a fact; it is a story you are living in

Many trade business owners will resonate with this segment of the conversation, particularly those who have been expressing feelings of overwhelm for the past six months.

Jeremiah challenges the word itself:

“Overwhelmed compared to what?”

That question forces you to separate the facts from the feeling. In other words, yes, you have many tasks to manage.

But the moment you assume it “should not” be happening, your brain turns it into panic, pressure, and paralysis. The shift involves learning to view challenges as opportunities for capacity growth rather than as a crisis.

Problems do not disappear; they level up

If you have ever thought, “Once I hire the right people, it’ll get easier” or “Once we hit this revenue, I’ll relax,” you are not alone.

But Jeremiah puts it plainly:

“Problems never go away. They just increase in quality.”

This concept serves as a potent reframe for tradespeople, as it prevents them from striving for an elusive goal.

Bigger businesses come with higher-quality problems.

That is not a sign you are failing. It’s usually a sign you’re levelling up.

The goal is not to eliminate problems. The goal is to build the skill, systems, and leadership to handle better problems with less stress.

You do not need more motivation; you need motion

If you are waiting to “feel like it” again, you could be waiting a long time.

Jeremiah clarifies that energy is the result of action, not the opposite.

That’s why he advocates for movement, momentum, and simple rituals to help you regain momentum.

“You have to move because emotion comes from motion.”

This single line holds immense value for any business owner experiencing stagnation.

When you find yourself stagnant, the worst course of action is to give up.
Momentum is not built by thinking harder.
It is built by moving, even if it is messy at first.

Run meetings that actually fix things

If you’ve ever thought, “That could’ve been an email,” you’ll love this.

Jeremiah’s rule is simple: meetings are for decisions. Not updates. Not venting. He avoids revisiting the same issues repeatedly.

He even suggests scoring meetings to lift the standard and stop wasting everyone’s time.

For a trade business, this matters because clarity is leverage. The quicker you make decisions, the quicker you solve problems, and the less pressure you face.

What to do next if you feel stuck in the grind?

You do not need a total reinvention. You need a reset that gives you your spark back and turns you back into the leader your business needs.

From the episode, here are three practical starting points you can put into play immediately:

Start by protecting your energy as if it were your most valuable asset, because it truly is.

Then get brutally honest about what you want next, whether that is lifestyle, legacy, growth, or an eventual exit.

Finally, build a simple daily rhythm that supports your body and your mind, so you are not relying on willpower alone.
