ABOUT THE SITE SHED’S LEARN ‘N’ TRAVEL PROGRAM

While on a weekend ski trip in Australia a few years back, Matt and a couple of his builder friends started talking about how good it would be if it was possible to travel to some of the worlds top ski and surf locations, but do it as a business expense.

As a former plumber, Matt totally understood the frustration of running a business that’s tied to a location. Of course, there are lots of positives also, however one thing that is quite restricted is the ability to travel.

I know how hard it is to get away when you’re a business owner. Business commitments, family and life in general get in the way. Not to mention the guilt of not spending that time and money in a way that benefits your business.

I developed this program as a way for tradies and contractors to have their cake and eat it.

You can now travel to world class locations, with an awesome group of like minded people, while also learning and applying skills that will help you grow your business.

Who wouldn’t want to do that?

– Matt Jones

WHO’S IT FOR?

Primarily, this event is for people that work in a trade business (like plumbing, building, electrical, etc). You’ll probably be either the business owner, a manager, in the marketing department, or someone within an organisation that is looking to advance their skills for the benefit of the company they work for.

You’d probably enjoy travel and in this instance, as we’re going to Japan in winter, you’ll probably enjoy snow sports like skiing, snowboarding, building snowmen and drinking saké.

If you enjoy meeting new people, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to network and collaborate with people just like yourselves from lots of different locations and markets. You’ll meet Australians, New Zealanders, North American’s and people from all types of locations and backgrounds.

You’ll enjoy epic snow, epic food and probably a few cold beers after a long day charging perfect waves 😉

You’ll be the type that likes to learn and improve. Much of what we’ll be teaching will be new to you, so you’ll need to have an open mind and go in with a ‘teach me new things’.

You’ll need to be comfortable with stepping away from the business for a few days. Sure you’ll be able to connect to the internet and cellular phones will work, however you’ll be in a different timezone.

If that kind of sounds like you, then you’re in the right place.

WHY WOULD YOU COME?

  • This is an amazing opportunity to attend a tax-deductible business workshop in one of the worlds greatest ski locations.
  • You’ll be learning new skills that can help you advance your business.
  • You’ll be networking with like-minded people from both in your market and in others. That means there’s potential to do business.
  • You’ll get to experience a trip that very few people in the world ever get the chance to experience.
  • You’ll get to ski/board, what is globally regarded as the best snow on Earth.
  • You’ll eat the best food you’ve ever tasted.
  • You’ll get to experience an amazing culture.

EVENT FORMAT

Simple really. We wake up and prepare for a day of fun on the mountain. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced skier/snowboarder, or if it’s your first time, Furano caters to all levels of ability.

You can do whatever you like during the day. If you want to ski as many runs as you can, go for it. If you want to sit inside and drink hot chocolate or mulled wine, you can do that too. If you want to build snowmen and gorge on delicious Japanese cuisine, it’s up to you.

In the afternoon, we’ll make our way back to the hotel, where the conference room will be ready and waiting for us to conduct a two-hour workshop from 4pm – 6pm.

After the workshop, we’ll head out to one of the local restaurants for dinner and a few refreshments, swapping stories of who had the biggest stacks and maybe even a touch of karaoke (don’t knock it until you try it).

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO BE LEARNING

Over the last 18 months, I have been faced with the realisation of how important it is to have a structured organisation. Pretty much everything you do in your business will stem from the way that your organisation is structured.

Marketing >> Sales >> Hiring >> Finance >> Etc

At this event, you’ll learn how to create an organisation chart (org chart), which will help you break down the departments, the roles and the responsibilities that live within your business to ensure that it is scalable and manageable.

You’ll learn to establish where your time is best spent in your business and what areas you need to find people or technology to fulfil.

This could be the single most important business education, you’ll ever partake in.

FREEING UP YOUR TEAM WITH TECHNOLOGY

Long-time member and friend of The Site Shed, Clinton Cowin will be presenting at Ski and Learn 2019 to teach attendees the role of technology in your Organisational Chart.

Imagine if you could create more time in the calendar of you and your team, by implementing technology that free’s them up.

TradiePad are Australian based ‘cloud specialists’ that do just that, so by coming to this event, you’ll learn what tools will help your business scale efficiently and productively.

ABOUT FURANO

Furano is one of Japan’s most famous ski resorts, although relatively little is known about it outside of Japan. Situated in the middle of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, Furano benefits from Siberian storm systems that pass over the Sea of Japan and then dump the lightest and driest snow in all of Hokkaido – and 9 meters of it each season.

After a big snowfall there is often untracked powder for days.

The Furano Ski area is made up two zones, the Kitanomine zone (Mid. Dec – Late Mar) and the Furano zone (Late Nov – Early May). Both areas have a variety of accommodation options and the town of Furano is only a 3 min shuttle from the Kitanomine zone and a 6 min shuttle away from the Furano zone, and is home to a wide array of restaurants and bars and all the services you would expect to find in a town.

Both of these zones can be accessed on the one pass and are serviced by 11 lifts. Furano has an abundance of varied terrain for every level of skier and snowboarder and a vertical drop of over 950 meters making it one of the steepest mountains in Hokkaido.

Bordered by Hokkaido’s stunning Daisetsu-zan National Park, Furano is truly a world-class resort and it is a testament to the mountain and the quality of the snow that it has hosted the FIS Downhill World Cup 10 times and regularly hosts National and International ski and snowboard events including the 2005/2006 Snowboard World Cup.

Many of Japan’s top skiers choose to base themselves here due to the great conditions and exhilarating mountain.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to be a business owner?
Not at all. It’s a business workshop and you’ll be learning business content, which is relevant to anyone working in a business.
Can I bring a friend/colleague?

Absolutely. If you want to bring your team, or if you want to get a group together, got for it. There was a group of friends from Melbourne at the last one in New Zealand.

Do I have to be a good skier/snowboarder?

On our previous trips, we’ve had people that had never skied or snowboarded before and they had a great time. Experienced, or inexperienced, it caters for all.

Do I need to ski/board, or can I hang out?

You don’t have to ski/board if you don’t want to. You can sit by the fire in the hotel and read a book if that’s what appeals to you.

Can I bring members of my team?
Absolutely. You can bring whoever you like…provided there are enough tickets.
Can I bring my spouse?

Sure. I dare say a few of the attendees will be using this trip as a perfect excuse to take the Mrs away. Why not get in the good books?

What's the deal with flights?

Japan is very easy to get to. You can fly there from all over the world. You can organise your own flights, or our travel agent can do the whole lot for you.

Are the deposits refundable?

The deposits will be going directly to the hotel reservations, so if you pull out, you’ll only get it back if someone fills your spot.

Is there phone and internet access over there?

Yes. Phones work there on either local data plans or global roaming. You’ll be able to connect to the internet in most places through WIFI or data.

What's the currency?

In Japan they have ‘Japanese Yen – ¥’. One Australian dollar will buy you approx 12¥. To give you an idea of costs, a beer might cost you $3AUD., Yeah, it’s pretty cheap over there.

Do I need to be able to speak Japanese?

As helpful as it would be, fortunately not. Most of the ski areas have a strong English speaking population due to tourism. Feel free to practice though.
